Our Top 3 Wheelsets Under €500

As you’ll see, we’re going to present three products from three different brands. For this comparison, we’re assuming that you’re looking for a wheelset for road cycling. There are wider models designed for gravel, but I won’t cover them here; otherwise, our TOP 3 would quickly turn into a TOP 10.

I’ll be using several criteria to explain our wheelset selection, including the carbon fiber used, hubs, spokes, warranty, and any other features worth highlighting.

What Type of Carbon Fiber and Rim Profile Are Used in the EliteWheels ENT 2.0, CSC, and Trifox Wheelsets?

The specific Toray carbon fiber used in the EliteWheels ENT 2.0 is not specified. The ENT 2.0 is available with several rim depths, allowing you to choose a wheelset suited to your type of riding! The listing offers 38 mm, 50 mm, and 55 mm options, but by browsing other listings, you can also find 30 mm rims and options deeper than 55 mm. These wheels are fairly heavy for a carbon wheelset, but they can support a total weight of 130 kg (you and your bike). Wheelset weights range from 1,450 g to 1,950 g.

Trifox also uses T800 carbon fiber for its rims, but offers a maximum rim width of 25 mm, which could be a limitation for those looking to run wider tires. With its W11 wheelset, Trifox offers several rim depths: 40 mm, 45 mm, 50 mm, and 60 mm. However, it does not offer a particularly shallow rim option for mountain riding, unlike EliteWheels and CSC.

So, CSC takes the win in this category.

Which Hubs Are Used on the EliteWheels ENT 2.0, CSC, and Trifox W11?

When it comes to wheels from Asia, they often come with proprietary hubs. This can be a little confusing, as it raises questions about their quality and how they perform.
We haven’t tested these wheelsets ourselves, let alone over 10,000 km, so we can’t provide any real-world feedback. However, it’s important to take buyers’ reviews and experiences into account.

elite wheels ent 2.0 aliexpress www.veloexotique.fr

With both EliteWheels and CSC, you can choose between steel or ceramic bearings (with an additional cost of around €40). In our opinion, the ceramic option isn’t worth the extra cost. With Trifox, there is no option for ceramic bearings, only steel bearings.

The TRIFOX and EliteWheels hubs feature 4 pawls, while CSC uses 6 pawls. This means that when you start pedaling again, the hub engages at 6 points instead of 4, providing slightly quicker engagement and a more responsive feel.

EliteWheels also offers a hub with 60 teeth, which provides faster engagement. Will you actually feel a difference? I’m not sure, but it’s still an interesting feature compared with CSC or TRIFOX, which don’t provide any information about this.

So, EliteWheels takes the win in this category.

What Spokes Are Used on the EliteWheels ENT 2.0, CSC, and Trifox W11?

For CSC and EliteWheels, we’re looking at fairly standard spokes: Pillar 1423, with 21 spokes at the front and 24 at the rear for EliteWheels, and 24 spokes at both the front and rear for CSC and Trifox. They’re not the lightest option, but they are strong and durable.
Trifox does not specify the spoke brand, but they are made of steel.

What Is the Warranty for the EliteWheels ENT 2.0, CSC, and Trifox W11?

EliteWheels and CSC offer a 1,000-day warranty. If you purchase through AliExpress, you also benefit from additional protection provided by the marketplace.
As for Trifox, the warranty is two years. Regarding the maximum rider weight, Trifox has a 100 kg limit, while EliteWheels allows up to 130 kg and CSC up to 125 kg.
So, once again, EliteWheels has a slight advantage in this category.

What About Resale?

In this comparison, there’s really no contest: EliteWheels has a stronger reputation than the other two brands. As a result, their wheelsets should be easier to resell on the second-hand market. Of course, the warranty is not transferable to the new owner for any of the three brands.

What to Expect from a €500 Wheelset

Let’s be honest, €500 is entry-level pricing. But that doesn’t mean poor quality—far from it. As always, it’s all about compromises. At €500, you’re entering the world of carbon wheels, but to put it simply, only the rim will be made of carbon. The rest of the wheel will be fairly similar to an aluminum wheel, which is why the weight difference is relatively small. I recommend checking out my article about the different types of carbon fiber, because at this price point, you’ll generally only have access to T700 or T800 carbon fiber.

The rim will therefore be made of carbon, while the spokes will be made of steel. They are often entry-level spokes from Pillar, such as the 1423, which have a very good reputation. They are also used on EliteWheels and CSC wheelsets, both of which feature in our top 3!

The hubs will often be branded with the name of the wheel manufacturer. You won’t find high-end hubs at the €500 price point. CSC offers a 6-pawl hub compared with 4 pawls on EliteWheels. On paper, that’s better, but the difference won’t be noticeable in real-world riding.

Why Not Spend More on Carbon Wheels?

€500 is a significant amount of money. While we’re still a long way from the wheels used in the Tour de France, it’s always worth thinking about resale value. The time will come when a new wheelset with a different rim profile catches your eye, and when that happens, you’ll want to sell your current wheels!

The depreciation on this type of product is likely to be relatively low. If you go with a brand like EliteWheels, it is well known, so potential buyers may feel more confident purchasing your used wheelset. With a lesser-known brand, the situation could be different.

In any case, you shouldn’t have to sell your wheelset for less than €300, unless it has been damaged!

Is It Worth Spending €600 on Carbon Wheels?

The difference between €500 and €600 is just €100, and €100 isn’t even enough to buy a pair of tires. So yes, stepping up to a €600 wheelset can be a worthwhile upgrade.

Will this give you access to a completely different type of wheelset? No. You’ll still have a similar overall design, with essentially the same rim and hub, but you’ll likely get higher-end spokes, such as aerodynamic steel spokes, and you may also have the option of ceramic bearings.

But that will be the subject of a full article!
